2013 Subaru WRX – IAG + APV3 calibration

2013 Subaru WRX – IAG + APV3 calibration

On a hot summer day in the beginning of June we had the pleasure of tuning this Subaru WRX.  This WRX came from another region of the nation and needed to be calibrated for our swamp weather here in the deep south.
Ambient conditions on the day got up to 103F, at the time we ended up finishing the tune we were blessed with ambient temps dropping to 93F 56% and 30.03

The mods that were present on this vehicle we some very good ones:
IAG stage2.5 bottom end, ported head, Kelford 268cams, Garrett GT35R, Front Mount Intercooler, TGV deletes, ID1000cc, DW350lph fuel pump, Cobb APV3 and Turbo back exhaust.
Shell 93oct was used and peak PSI was reached to 21.5psi

Got to say that we got some decent power output especially since it was a miserable hot day at the shop.  Took it out of the shop in the evening, tested the vehicle on the highway and made sure that the KO and DAM were acting accordingly as it was doing in the dyno.
Special thanks to Brock for trusting us with this nice project.

2016 Volkswagen Golf R – APv3 calibration

Client contacted us to do a protune on this vehicle as he recently bought a APv3 from us.  Client added the necessary parts to be able to use the stage3 mapping that Cobb Tuning offers.

Intake, catted downpipe, catback exhaust and upgraded fmic.

APR stage1 DSG / reflash on the vehicle.

Ambient conditions on the day were: 78F, 72% hum. and 30.03 baro

First graph is the before and after the Protune with Dyno jet simulated numbers.

The above figure is the native Dyno Dynamics figure after the Protune.  Boost pressure during the calibration was 27psi tapering to 22psi at 7000 rpms.

There is still some more to be learned from this initial tune on this platform and we will be seeing this vehicle once again to see if we can extract a few more hp from the engine.  Special thanks to Mike for trusting in our tuning abilities.

2015 Subaru WRX – Protune stage 2

As always thankful for getting a chance to meet new people and this was no different as I received a client at the shop that day from the state of MS.  His vehicle was a 2015 Subaru WRX on stage 2 mods.  He was using a e-tune and was tired of going back and forth and not being able to get the tune spot on.

Car came in and we first proceeded to do a smoke test on the engine to make sure we did not have a boost leak before the session.  Boost leak test came back negative and then seeing that we proceeded to put the vehicle on the rollers.

Mods on this vehicle were:

Grimmspeed EBCS / Grimmspeed CAI / Perrin Chargepipe /  Tomioka Racing downpipe / PRL tgv and egr deletes
Cobb Accessport v3

Ambient conditions on the day were: 74F, 45% humidity and 30.13 baro.  Test runs were in 4th gear.

Purple line was as the car came in, hitting 20psi and tapering to 15psi.
Grey line was at the end of the tune, 19psi tapering to 16psi.  On this run i let off the throttle after 100mph due to seeing higher IATs. This was later corrected on the highway after some runs in the real world.
These were dyno jet presented numbers.

2015 Subaru WRX – Stage1 mapping

Got a local friend that hit me up asking me for some help on his Subaru. He has issues of the car stalling at stop signs and stop lights. Got the car in and looked at the plugs and they were fine.

Checked and see and this car has a AEM intake with box but with no calibration.  Seeing this we ordered a Cobb Tuning APv3 and installed it.

Made some adjustment on the dyno over the OTS stage 1 calibration and was able to find a little power enhancements and now no more stalling on stops.

Ambient temps at the tune 92F, 70% humidity and 30.03 Baro.

Test was made in 4th gear.

Before an after the Protune, fueling was very inconsistent with the oem calibration and now its dialed in. Managed to make the turbo spool a bit quicker
as well with the calibration move.

Baseline pull in blue and then the other two lines are after the calibration on stage1.  These are Dyno Jet simulated numbers.

Thanks again Forty for trusting us with your ride!

2005 Subaru WRX – APv3 Protune

Good day to you guys, well in another hot humid day in Kenner, LA we had a client come in from Biloxi, MS.  This was his first Subaru he has ever owned and wanted to make sure the car was running good from the previous owner that had the vehicle.  The vehicle is a 2005 Subaru WRX, with these list of mods:

  • 2.5L Built bottom end (forged internals)
  • 2.5L head (HD exhaust and intake valves), no avcs with TGV delete
  • Blouch td06-20G (BB)
  • Injector Dynamics 1000cc
  • Fuel pump
  • Larger TMIC
  • Turbo back exhaust
  • Cobb Accessport v3
  • Cobb intake
  • Southbend clutch kit.

As our usual way to start things is getting the car on the rollers, strap it down correctly and place all the necessary sensors needed for the calibration.  As we discovered after we made a 3rd and 4th gear WOT sweep as soon as the Blouch turbo would come alive our AFR went up with the boost and as many know that is not the way to keep a EJ255 motor happy and in one piece.  That meant we could not even do a full RPM run and we had to get to mapping the engine straight away.
As soon as we started getting the fueling down to the right range we started running into another issue.  As the boost started coming in as we made a sweep usually around 5000-5500 rpms the car would experience a sensation as the clutch was slipping.
Lowered the boost to wastegate spring rate and that did not help matters that much either.  Asked the client once again the clutch was on the car and he said that Southbend clutch was only in there for a few months.
We could not get that distinct smell of clutch when we were making the runs since the car was also exhibiting a little oil burning smell and that was indeed masking any other smell in the dyno room.

We now decided to get it off the rollers and do some street testing to make sure it was not the dyno giving a odd load to the vehicle (which I knew that was not the case) during the test runs.
Well as we tested on the local highways sure enough, right at the same psi and rpms as the dyno the car would quickly rev up in the same zone where the vehicle starts making its peak WTQ.  In any case managed to properly map the engine for where we could on the psi where it did not slip which in this case was around 13psi. Oh yeah the client tried to do a weak little launch and that only solidified our initial hunch that is was a clutch issue that we were experiencing.

So for now we are going to be ordering a new clutch kit for this client and installing it. Once the clutch kit is properly broken in we are going to re-visit this calibration session.

So stay tuned to see where this nice Blouch 20g ends up making once the bugs are sorted it out.

Thanks for checking out our blog posts.  Cheers

2013 Subaru WRX Hatch

It is always nice when you can provide a complete package to a client.  This was the case with this client, we supplied him the parts that he wanted for a good price.

Military discount was applied to this client as well.  We offer discounts to our brave military people and also any emergency personel.

With the parts in and awaiting for his arrival the day to drop the car off was finally here.

Before the vehicle was fitted with its upgraded parts we did a baseline to see what the vehicle output was.  At the time the car had only a Invidia cat back exhaust.

We count on a great experienced tech by the name of Zach for this job. Zach did not waste any time in putting in the Cobb intake and Invidia down pipe in this vehicle. Great turn around time, the client was able to get his car installed and flashed with its new APv3 stage 2 OTS calibration.

Next day it was time for the calibration as the Dyno Dynamics AWD was ready to do the work.  Car was tested to see what the power gains were not with the OTS stag2 map.  After that test was done it was time for the ProTune to see where the engine power was going to end up.  Well it did not dissapoint.

2013 Volkswagen GTI MK6

A client contacted me and wanted his VW GTI calibrated, we spoke about the mods that he had and what we could do for his set up.  After finally getting the go ahead from the client a appointment was set up to visit the rollers.  This past week we had the great opportunity to finally order the VW Cobb Tuning  Protuner license.  Before the license key arrived from Cobb that game me a good chance to hit up some of the great only tutorials and tips that Cobb offers for its ProTuners.

Always the challenge with calibrating a new platform that we are not used to seeing is knowing what tables need to be touched and understanding how the actual oem ECU does its strategy to achieve safe power levels.  The one thing I love about the Cobb tuning platform is the great lengths the engineers go to keep all the necessary safety nets in place so the car’s engine can be protected during all the regions of  operation.

Mods on the vehicle were:

Cobb Intake / Cobb Turbo Back exhaust / Cobb Accessport v3 / DSG  Auto Transmission

vw1 vw2 vw3 vw4 vw5 vw6 vw7 vw8 vw9

RFossum13GTI

Before and after results of the Stage2 ProTune calibration.   Test was done in 4th gear sport mode and ambient conditions on the day were: 82F, 50% hum. 29.97 Baro.

Client’s reaction a day after the mapping of  his vehicle.

Overall, what an improvement, especially on the lower and really high
end. Makes sense for what we changed!

Also it’s boosting up to 20.7psi, which is perfect.

Thanks a lot again man!
